Tickets now Available for the Casual Fifth Fifth Anniversary
To mark this milestone we’ll be putting on a show with some of our greatest hits and featuring special guests. This concert is 90 minutes of taiko, dance, music, and many collaborations in between.
Casual Fifth is a Philadelphia-based Taiko and Modern Dance ensemble focused on creating innovative work rooted in the fundamentals and history of Japanese Taiko drumming and American modern dance.
Since 2020 Casual Fifth has grown with more taiko cadets, more mentors, and more original pieces. In addition to creating new repertoire in taiko and dance separately, our goal is finding the combination of taiko and dance together.
Sukeroku Taiko was the first Kumi-Taiko group in Japan to use Naname Dai, the traditional Bon Taiko style of placing the drum diagonally on a stand, instead of flat on the ground. This stand is also known as the "Sukeroku stand" and is incredibly popular in Japan and all around the world.
Sukeroku Taiko began as a group of Bon drummers united in in their collective desire to carry on the Yushima tradition of taiko. After deciding to become a professional Kumi-Taiko group, they began their training, studying Edo-style classical percussion under Master Sasazo Kineya of the National Theatre, as well as cultivating their command of established taiko traditions . By combining this training in the numerous styles of Japanese traditional percussion, superior drum skills honed by years of Bon-Taiko, with an innovative, individualistic flair, the modern Sukeroku Taiko style was born.
Imaizumi-Sensei and members of Sukeroku have been friends and mentors to Mac for the past several years, and we are honored that they will volunteer their time to be guests in our performance.
Appropriate for all ages!
