After a week long retreat in Down East Maine, Casual Fifth is putting on an evening of Taiko and Dance at Founders Hall in East Blue Hill Friday and Saturday August 16th and 17th at 7:30 PM
Suggested donation is $10-$20 at the door, all proceeds benefit the East Blue Hill Village Improvement Association

Utsu Hachijo

Hachijo is an island south of Tokyo known for it's taiko festivals. Utsu Hachijo is a composition by one of the first performing taiko groups ONDEKOZA. This is our arrangement of the Ondekoza classic.
C'est Bon

Obon is a summer festival throughout Japan that features folk dances in a circle around a single taiko drum and other musicians playing Bon Odori music. These festivals sparked many of the first taiko ensembles in Japan and the US, and our arrangement features flashy solos inbetween a driving rhythm
Back Beat for the Hot Gossip

Tense Tones began as a solo taiko piece. It was expanded to be a duet and performed in Tokyo with Sukeroku Daiko. For the next expansion, a full dance number is being developed to accompany the music and will see it's final form in the Philadelphia Fringe Festival in Sep 2024. This is the first draft after our week long retreat
Two Shores

Two Shores pays homage to two different festival drumming traditions from Miyake Island and Hachijo Island. Both of these festivals have been made into stage performances by Ondekoza and KODO, where they have international recognition and many taiko groups have their own version of each song. This piece interlocks the two styles known for their visually appealing style of hitting the drum horizontally.
Hunt-Catch-Kill: Shishimai
Arr. traditional. Performed by Aki, Drumming form MacThe Shishimai is a lion that appears both in Kabuki plays and in our case, as an animal costume. The shishimai is commonly found in New Years celebrations, as getting a bite from the Shishi is good luck for the year. The movements and arrangement are similar to other versions of the piece, and follow the cat behavior: Hunt, catch, kill, eat, groom, sleep.Hunt-Catch-Kill: Shishimai

Composed by Mac, performed by company.This music was composed as an accompaniment to house dance, developed as a conversation of taiko and dance between Mac and Maddie. Over time the arrangement has expanded to include more instrumentation while sticking the original groove.Urban Legend
Miyake
Arranged by Mac and Alex, solos from Yidan, Yuya, and Alex, performed by CompanyMiyake Island is home to a large fisherman community. The primary rhythm and movements of this piece are inspired by fisherman casting and pulling in nets of fish. We also sing Kiyari, a musical prayer with many different verses chosen to fit the event. Miyake was originally popularized by KODO, who made a stage performance version of the folk tradition. KODO's international tours have inspired many a taiko player to learn and perform their own versions of this powerful piece.Miyake
